Jayme A Vianna, Alexandre S Reis, Lucas P Vicente, and Marcelo Hatanaka have done a great project with Discus. They evaluated 40 ophthalmologists in residency training at the University of Sao Paulo. The results were published as an abstract at the May 2012 ARVO meeting in Ft Lauderdale, USA (and here is the poster). Residents in the 2nd and 3rd year of training obtained fairly good performance (Fig. 3, ROC area, 0.74), better than those in the 1st year (0.69). Only a few "stars" perform at the level measured with fellowship-trained glaucoma subspecialists. (For us, this is reassuring - it indicates that Discus really does measure what it is supposed to...). The most striking feature is the large spread in performance and decision-criteria. This means that Discus is worth using. Thank you, Brasilian friends!
